Biting the Hand That Feeds Me

9 Apr

Sidney Lumet died earlier today.  Even though he directed a ridiculous amount of classics, it’s hard for me not to immediately think of the “Mad as Hell” scene in Network.    I know it’s shocking to think of that before The Wiz, but it’s true!  Plus I think of that before Serpico, a movie I adore more, but that is also true.

My download for today had to be a protest song of some sort, and what better to protest against than the media?

There was a time in my life when I listened to The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy’s album, “Hypocrisy is the Greatest Luxury” every single day, at least once.   Here’s “Television, the Drug of a Nation.”  Listen, go to your window and yell….

Sun Turns Black, Moon Turns Blood & Iggy Pop Is On Idol

8 Apr

I haven’t seen American Idol this season, but last night as I was flipping through stations, I happened to catch it midway through Iggy Pop’s performance.  Huh?!  Iggy Pop on Idol???  I’m pretty sure that was a specific event that had to happen prior to The Rapture.

The performance was amazing on so many levels, not least of which was that I spent the rest of the evening listening to old Iggy and the Stooges stuff.  Take a gander.  I feel like it’s up there with PiL on American Bandstand.

30+ years after The Stooges first album and he’s still got it.  Orange, but incredible.

Here’s “No Fun,” from that first LP back in 1969.  I’ve also thrown in the Sex Pistols’ cover of it as well, which is also fantastic.

The Long & Short of It

7 Apr

In case you don’t know about (him), you should.  I wasn’t sure what name to write there.

There’s  a guy named Dayve Hawk who records some awesome music.  Some he does under the name Weird Tapes.  Some he records as Memory Cassette, which he refers to as his feminine alter-ego to Weird Tapes.   And he releases still more as Memory Tapes, which is a combination of the two.  Still following?

He neither drives nor owns a phone, which I guess doesn’t really matter, but it’s kind of interesting.

Ultimately all you really need to know is that you must download “Bicycle” right now.  And in case you were wondering, it’s Memory Tapes.

A Beggar for Your Kisses

6 Apr

I know Margauxville hasn’t explored it yet, but I’m a ridiculously big fan of Atlantic Records.  Not now of course (duh), but THE Atlantic Records.  The music that came out on that label has been with me for as long as I can remember.

I even went to Nesuhi Ertegun‘s funeral.  I still haven’t accepted that my beloved Ahmet is dead, so we won’t talk about that, but I will tell you that he kissed my hand (right one) about 12 years ago – and I still haven’t washed it.

Not that a little hygiene issue should make you think there’s any correlation to the beautiful song for today, “A Beggar for Your Kisses” by The Diamonds.  Such gorgeousness, such yearning:  “Now I don’t ask for all of your love, just a little insignificant bit would do…”  Gets me every time.

The Diamonds came and went and never really made an impact on the charts or anything, but no matter.  As usual, my men at Atlantic could spot talent.

I just made you a little copy from a record.  The vinyl noise makes it even better.  Go on, listen.

Suitable for Spooning

5 Apr

“Immune” by Low is so beautiful – the perfect music for a damp gray day.

It would be even better with the crackling of a fire in the background, but I won’t dwell on that.  It’s not even that necessary when you get right down to it, because this song is like a warm sonic fuzzy blanket.

Cuddle up, here.

Good morning!

4 Apr

Yuck.

Love the name, love their sound. I must admit, I still stumble over the fact that there is a ’90s revival going on.  It seems too soon.   Of course I know it’s 10 years out and all, but…

However you classify them, they’re great.

Here’s “Georgia,” a song that if listened to early, guarantees a good start to the day.

Don’t Call Me Pain

3 Apr

Yesterday I walked a total of about 6 blocks and my leg was killing me by the time I got home.  Definitely more pain than the Malevich exhibit (which was the reason I ventured out) deserved.  It was good and all, but on the pain-being-worth-it scale, it fails miserably.

That said, if you’re ambulatory, it’s definitely worth seeing.  Gagosian Galleries seem to be as common as Starbucks these days; this is at the uptown one.

Speaking of pain, don’t  call me me pain!  My name is mystery!    Thank you yesterday and thank you pain for putting this one in my head.   The Pop Group were so, so, so ahead of their time.  Here’s “Don’t Call Me Pain.”

Now go enjoy your day.

Love,

Mystery

Ooh La La

Is it just me or did girls actually look better in the ’60s?  Or maybe just French girls?  I mean you really only have to look at any Godard film and I’m pretty sure my theory is proven rather easily.

I’ve had the super catchy Serge Gainsbourg written track, “Laisse Tomber Les Filles” in my head since I woke up.  It’s fun and bouncy and perfect for a lovely sunny day.  It was recorded in 1964 by a then-17 year old France Gall and I guarantee you’ll have it in your head all day long as well.

I also love the video that was done for it.  Her hair is totally messed up when she’s outside, but it doesn’t matter in the least.  I guess she just has a certain je ne sais quoi.

Download the song here, but watch the video below too.

Merci.

Hello April Fool’s!

1 Apr

John Martyn, 1975

I mostly hate April Fool’s themed posts and tweets and pranks, but I do have the perfectly themed song for today, so I’m going to embrace it.

John Martyn’s “Hello Train,” from his second album way back in ’68, is too perfect not to post.  I had heard some of his songs here and there over the years, but I didn’t really truly understand the joys of  Mr. Martyn till my friend John Robertson shared the lot with me.  And wow.  Not sure how I had that big hole in my music library, but I was glad to fill it.

Now here’s an odd coincidence.  John and I have a mutual friend, Jason Koxvold, who is an utterly amazing photographer; you should absolutely check out his work pronto.

John Martyn circa 1975 completely looks like a relative of Jason’s.  Maybe not a brother, but definitely a first cousin.  I realize this story will only be (mildly) interesting to John and Jason, but as of today, you’ve gotten three months of free songs, so don’t even think about complaining.

Download it here.
