I Heart New York

9 Feb

©Paul McDonough

Earlier today, I came across some photos of New York City in the ’70s today that blew me away.  Unfortunately, I discovered these photos by Paul McDonough after his most recent show ended, but check them out – they’re amazing.

As anyone who’s been reading me knows, there’s pretty much nothing I love more than New York City.   (You can read some of my love stories to New York here and here.)

And, because I love you as well,  Gil Scott-Heron’s wonderful “New York City” (circa 1970s) is downloadable right here.

The Soundtrack To My Dreams

8 Feb

I don’t know too much about Ralfe Band other than that they’re British and that I like them.  They have a magical, dreamy, surreal and utterly visual style to their sound and I’ve often wanted to license their music for various spots I’ve produced.

Usually what happens is some pesky Creative Director gets in the way and says it sounds “too Fellini” or some other comment to which I want to answer, “We should be so lucky….”

This song, “Frascati Way South,” like their others, transports me and there’s really not too much else I can ever ask of a song.

What do you think?  Download here.

I Remember Paris

7 Feb

Gary Moore died yesterday, in a hotel room in Southern Spain.  I always wonder if airlines treat bodies any more carefully than they do regular luggage.  I’m hoping I never find out.

“Parisienne Walkways” is a great song about memories.  With amazing guitar licks, of course.  It features Phil Lynott, too.  I think it’s pretty special.  I just wish I hadn’t thought of it because of seeing a “R.I.P.”

Get Out!

5 Feb

God willing and weather permitting, I feel like I may finally get out of Los Angeles this evening.

And you know there is NO BETTER song for getting the hell out of LA than than this 1980 gem from X.  Don’t believe me?  Download here.

Get Yer Lighters Out

4 Feb

When people ever even bother to talk about Buckcherry, they’re almost always bashing them.  Maybe it’s just the people I’ve come into contact with — previously.  Unlike all of you of course.  You, like me, could not possibly understand how someone could slag any group who is responsible for “Lawless and Lulu.”

It’s a straight-ahead, fist-pumping rock song, but with all the fun and glory that type of song deserves.

Buckcherry, I’m crazy about your love.

Small Man, Big Mouth

2 Feb

I’m not actually annoyed at anyone today – yet. But when that inevitably does happen, I really hope that my anger will be directed at some short guy with a Napoleon complex.

Download this fab Minor Threat track and I’m sure you’ll be wishing that you get pissed off as well. And for your sake, I hope that’s the case for you too.

February 1.

1 Feb

When I was little, my father used to love singing along to Neil Diamond cassettes in the car and I would beg him to stop.  I complained and called Neil Diamond the “national punishment of Siberia” which not only doesn’t make sense, it also doesn’t apply at all. Today Neil Diamond is one of my all-time favorites….so much so that it was awfully hard to decide which song to post here.

My dad died 16 years ago today and so I see no better tribute than posting one of the classics, “I Am, I Said.” Plus that song has to do with New York & LA, so it fits on all sorts of levels.   If the written word is more your style, last year I posted this to mark the occasion.

Incidentally, today is also my one monthiversary of a download-a-day Margauxville. If you like it, please share it with your friends. If you hate it, share it with your enemies.

Rose Royce: More Than Just “Car Wash”

31 Jan

Even though I know that Rose Royce did the original version of “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore,”  I always think of Madonna’s version first.  That annoys me.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Madonna, but Rose Royce’s version is where it’s at.  The instrumentation, the voice, the late ’70s wonderfulness…it’s all so great.  Here, listen/download.

One more thing:  though Rose Royce’s version may not have a video shot by Jean-Baptiste Mondino, it does have one that’s full o’ slow-burning funk.

The Workday “Grind”

29 Jan

I wouldn’t mind working seven days a week as much if my office life was like the one in the Belle & Sebastian song, “Step Into My Office, Baby.”

You can download this, their very first single on Rough Trade from back in 2003, here.

In the meantime, I’m about to jump on the 50th conference call of the week.  And, nope, no, um,  window washing will be involved on this one either.

My Aching Head

28 Jan

I have had a headache for two days now, on and off.  I had a respite from it last night, which coincided with a delightful tapas dinner, but that was a lucky accident.

Today the headache is back, worse than ever.  It’s the kind of headache that makes you feel nauseous and squinty.  So it’s only natural that the song of the day would be “Man of Constant Sorrow.”

As you listen/download this wonderful version from 1928 by Emry Arthur, can you also please send me “feel better” vibes?  Please?
