Saturday!

30 Apr

Let’s make this quick since we’re all dying to get outside today.  How about a completely infectious song for a lovely Springtime Saturday?   “Come Saturday” by the unfortunately named local NYC band, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart fits that bill pretty darn well.  I love their sounds of exuberance.

Seriously, if you just play this in combo with Smith Westerns “Weekend” posted awhile back, it will be 100% impossible not to have a great day.

Download.  Play.  Both in your ears and outside.  Now!

Up Jumped Spring

11 Apr

Whoa!  Is today the most beautiful day ever or what?  Finally, Spring!

Here’s a lovely song by Abbey Lincoln and Stan Getz:  “Up Jumped Spring,” from 1991.  It’s from the last album Stan Getz appeared on before he died. In general,  I’ve often had mixed feelings about Abbey’s singing, but I love this song and sentiment so much that I forget all my issues for 4:42.

Hurry up and download so you can get outside ASAP.

First Day of Spring

Spring in NYC

“I get along fine without you.  I get along fine without you, except in Spring.  So I never think of the Spring.  It would surely break my heart in two.  But I get along fine without you.”

Erik Sanko, better known as either part of Lounge Lizards or Skeleton Key, released his first solo album in 2001.  And this fantastic, oft-forgotten and sometimes maligned song, “I Get Along Fine” is part of it.

There is no other song which better suits the first day of Spring.  So here you go.  Listen to it outside – just make sure to do it today.  I just heard the words “wintry mix” regarding this coming week….

Please don’t take this entry the wrong way.  I get along fine without you.  Except when I write a new blog post.  So I never think of a new blog post.  But I get along fine without you.

Come Here, Lover-Boy….

17 Feb

I’m back in NYC, where there is gorgeous faux-Spring weather.   And nothing says faux-Spring like a little romance.   Since it’s common knowledge that romance always goes best with a great guitar lick, here’s Mickey & Sylvia’s “Love Is Strange.”

In a month or two, once full blown Spring happens, I’ll post one of my favorite sexxxxxxxy songs by a solo Sylvia….because nothing says full-blown Spring like doing “it.”
